I'm a specialist children's photographer based in Northamptonshire, near Olney in Buckinghamshire, not far from Milton Keynes or Northampton. It was lovely to make the most of the fabulous half term weather to get some great images of a lovely pair of sisters. I'd photographed the family previously but not since the addition of their now 8 month old baby girl. I like to take my images outdoors on location or in your own home in Watford, Rickmansworth Chorleywood and other areas of Hertfordshire. Now the weather has improved so much its great to be outdoors with children. I also find children are so much more relaxed and fun to photograph in their own home, on their turf if you like. They may wish to go on the trampoline, show you their toys, take you to their den amongst the leaves .. all these things mean that they really enjoy the photo session and hopefully this shows in the resultant images. I recently photographed some brand new 4-day old twins for a former Bride & Groom. Photos of newborn babies are best taken when they are less than 2 weeks old for those lovely sleepy curled up shots. The twins were fabulous models - a boy and a girl and only at the last minute would the little boy fall asleep like his sister so I could get a shot of them curled up together. I've been busy during the last few weeks with lots of new babies. I particularly enjoy taking the pictures when the babies are less than 2 weeks old to capture their delicacy and fragility. They grow so fast and fill out in no time so capturing pictures of tiny newborns is a real pleasure. Babies of any age are wonderful to photograph - but you get very different images as time passes and their personalities become even stronger. so here are a selection of some of my recent tiny clients of different ages. All images are taken in the comfort of your own home so the whole experience is as relaxed and enjoyable as possible for you and the baby.

I wanted to share some photos from a recent New Baby Session. These were taken at home which is relaxing for mum and baby. I was keen to get some lovely sleepy shots of the baby looking all curled up and peaceful but this little fella was having none of it and stayed wide awake the whole time smiling and even, despite being only 8 weeks old, looking like he was going to try and crawl away! I'm often asked to take pictures at baby and toddler groups. I love doing this as the pictures are really natural and celebrate some of the time that Mum and Baby get to spend together doing fun things with other Mums and Babies. Often the children stay friends for a long time through these groups as do the Mums! BaaBaa Babies is a great group run throughout Herts and Middlesex where babies can learn signing and enjoy musical and sensory activities. With Christmas fast approaching I'm doing lots of family shoots to provide gifts in particular for Grandparents. I'm often asked to do pictures of groups of cousins so all the grandchildren are together in a picture. Autumn is a great time to be taking photos outdoors. The weather might be colder but you get the lovely Autumn colours and children for the most part really don't notice the weather in the same way adults do ! The children can climb trees, play on the swings and run round in their woolly hats jumping in puddles. One of the lovely things about photography is that you never stop learning, improving and being inspired by others, so I undertake quite a lot of training courses over an average year. I've recently returned from a course up in the Lake District run by Contemporary Photographic Training (CPT). The course was really related to the Business side of photography but we did a bit of shooting too. Here are a few images that were shot during a really fun hands-on day with Bath/Bristol based Photographer Jo Hansford. The models were great to work with and it was a pleasure to meet Jo and learn more about her approach to Lifestyle Shoots.

Watford Peace Hospice Fundraising Event

I recently took some photos at a family day to help raise money for the Watford Peace Hospice. The event took place at Hunton Park - a beautiful venue - and was organised by the Peace Hospice to raise money. The Hospice and it's staff do a fantastic job day after day caring for the terminally ill and offering support to the families. There were stalls; bands; games; mini fairground rides; facepainting; bouncy castles and many other stalls and activities to keep everyone entertained. Unfortunately the British weather wasn't that kind to us on the day but there was still a pretty good turn out and all the children and families had a fun afternoon. Here are a few of the images.

Whippendell Woods, Watford - Portraits in the Bluebells

Once a year I try to make sure I photograph my daughter in the local bluebell woods as a means of charting her progress year by year (so far only missed one). I also do this because Spring is one of my favourite times of year and visiting the bluebell woods reminds me of this. My daughter is now old enough to remember lots of experiences and she has always loved the bluebells, so the last few weeks she's been bugging me constantly about when we could go .. and since the bluebells appeared we've made a few trips. This is a good example of when photos become important memories for children - hopefully when she is older and looks back on these she will remember that this was something the two of us did together (nearly) every year. A bit of training with Mark Betts Photography

Popped up to Northampton last week where Mark Betts had kindly offered to help me with some tips on studio lighting and location lighting. He kindly organised a model for the day - the lovely Izabela - and we did some shots in the studio and then outdoors in the (very windy!) nearby woods.

I haven't got any examples of the studio shots, as I took these with Mark's Camera - which for the record was a wierd sort of a camera ... began with a "C" I think .. anyway here are a few from the outdoor shoot which Mark set up with off-camera flash while Izabella braved the wind...

New Baby Portraits Welwyn Hertfordshire

SWPP - Gold Award for Travel

This month in the SWPP competition I received my first Gold Award in the Travel category. Those of you that know me will be aware that travel is one of my passions so I was really pleased to get an image scoring so high is this category. The picture was taken in Marrakech where I went with a group of great friends for a fairly recent "big birthday". Here is the image:

In between checking out the local culture and sipping wine on roof top terraces, I took lots of others but here are a few that I particularly like. People in Morocco generally were not keen to be photographed , which I completely respect, so most of these were taken with the camera slung over my shoulder trying to sneakily "shoot from the hip"... a pretty hit or miss technique really but I got a few hits.

Here are a few photos from a Lifestyle Model shoot that I did during the week - ie a shoot done outdoors that does not involve a white background, studio lights and being told to jump up in the air ! I much prefer working outdoors, the children really enjoy it and the results are much more natural and relaxed. My niece was visiting so it was a chance to get some photos with all the cousins together - they all like to think they are supermodels (!) so it was good fun. So we found a row of tatty old garages and took some shots there - here are my personal favourites.

I was delighted to receive a Gold Standard Score in the category of Bridal Portraiture in December. All Golds are put through to the Annual Judgeing to be considered for the Photographer of the Year category. This was the image for which I received my Gold.

Have just been to the SWPP annual convention where, aside from catching up with some photographer friends, seeing some fantastic lectures and attending inspiring seminars, I also found time to upgrade to a new toy. Here are some initial pictures from a Sunday morning spent playing about with the camera and a long-suffering but very patient model who does a excellent job while I mess about figuring out menus and settings !

Wedding Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park

There will no doubt be lots of couples who got engaged over the Christmas break and are now thinking about wedding planning. Don't discount winter weddings just because of the weather - after all with our record for Summer weather there are no guarantees anyway! I have just completed a couple of Winter Weddings and really enjoyed them. Very different in feel to Summer weddings and lovely to have the Christmas Trees and Christmas Decorations at the Venues and Christmas Carols being sung during the ceremony. Here are a few pictures from a recent wedding at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park. This is a beautiful venue - fantastic staff and a really fabulous location in the park itself. Many parents are worried about having portraits done outside at this time of year because "it's cold" and "the children will be wearing outdoor clothing" or "they won't look smart". True they probably won't look smart but they can look really, really cute in their woolly hats and scarves and they still have a really good time, get some fresh air, jump in a few puddles and get muddy .. which all makes for lovely happy natural fun family photos. Took some photos of some of my favourite little children this week. These were outdoor portraits at the Skate Park in Watford. It was a lovely crisp Autumn morning so the kids ran around the skate park, got covered in chalk sliding around on the concrete and then wandered back to the car via a little wooded area... at which point the lads in the skate park looked glad to be rid of us so they could reclaim the area. The following pictures were from a lovely portrait session at Rickmansworth Aquadrome. This is a beautiful area and great fun for children to run around, look at the swans and Geese and feed the ducks. It was a pleasure to meet the little ones featured in this session - the little fella was just 12 days old although born a very healthy 10lb and it was the first time himself and his little cousin (visiting from Russia) had met. Lovely for the grandparents to have all the family together. Congratulations to the family on their beautiful new son (and grandson). Had a lovely morning shoot in Harpenden. Everyone ran around including me, Mum and Dad. Only the baby didn't manage as she was too small but she had a good crawl about. A bit of tree climbing and time on the Pirate Ship was great. Here are just a few of my favourites.

Just completed a outdoor location shoot in the Chorleywood area. Managed to catch one of the few sunny weekends recently to do a few photos of some lovely youngsters. We went to a couple of really nice local wedding venues - Latimer House and Chenies Manor, and took a few shots in their stunning grounds. Here are just a few. Thanks to the guys and girls for a fun couple of hours.

Shoot with Beckstead - Workshop with David Beckstead

I recently undertook an intensive 3-day workshop with David Beckstead - A fantastic American Photographer who has been named one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the world..... pretty daunting! A large group of us gathered at Fanhams Hall - a great wedding venue in Hertfordshire - where we did a full days shooting in a number of interesting spots. We also did a night shoot and another morning's shooting at the Spirella building in Letchworth. The models worked hard and did an excellent job. It was a wonderful few days where I learnt some fantastic new concepts, superb compositional ideas and inventive ways to approach bridal shoots. Also met lots of really inspiring photographers and feel very lucky to have had such a great opportunity, with such a well respected, top photographer - thank you David.

We took hundreds of photos over the course of the workshop - this is just a small selection.

Wedding at The Old Palace, Hatfield House

Things are now calming down as far as the weddings go so I have a little more time to post up some images from weddings shot over our spectacular British Summer. I had some lovely weddings, with fabulous Brides and Grooms and some beautiful venues.

One of my favourites was an August Wedding in the Old Palace at Hatfield House, a fantastic historical place - we just about escaped the rain and it was a wonderful day. Just a few images from the day.

Newborn Baby Photos in St Albans

A spent a fabulous morning doing family portraits with beautiful 1 week old baby Charlie. New babies can just relax (and so can Mum and Dad ) if the photos are taken at home in your own time .. far less stressful than taking your new baby to a studio for portraits. You can take a break to feed the baby or let them sleep for a while. It's great to include all the family in a mixture of shots - here even the dog got in on the act! Congratulations to Lucy & Chas on the new member of the family.

I was recently commissioned to take photos for HJ Image - an image consultancy based in Watford. This was a great opportunity to learn about Personal Image Services; colour analysis; wardrobe detoxing etc.. I recently did a wonderful outdoor shoot in Cassiobury Park - a great way to get some excellent images of your children just being themselves. They get to just have fun and you get some beautiful images that really capture their personalities. This is a really enjoyable way to get some family photographs, particularly if you think your little ones won't be able to keep still in the studio !
